CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
Background
Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, is blessed with numerous human and natural resources. However, the country continues to experience several challenges that prevent its socio-economic development. Nigeria's need for comprehensive and sustainable development has never been more urgent than now as the country grapples with issues. Despite being a major oil producer, Nigeria still grapples with high levels of poverty (40.1%), inequality (35.1%), and unemployment (33.3%) [World Bank, 2023). The country also faces infrastructure deficits, particularly in the areas of power, transportation, and healthcare, which hinder its overall socio-development.
In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of Nigeria's need for socio-economic development in congruence with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. This includes efforts to diversify the economy from its heavy reliance on oil, improve human capital development through education and healthcare, and enhance infrastructure to support economic growth and improve living standards (World Bank, 2023). Given these challenges and opportunities, there is the need for a comprehensive and coordinated approach to address the socio-economic development of Nigeria from broader perspectives and approaches. This requires collaboration among policymakers, researchers, practitioners, and other stakeholders to identify critical imperatives and develop strategies for sustainable and inclusive development in the country. A conference focused on these objectives can provide platforms for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and generating actionable insights to drive socio-economic development in Nigeria.
Conference Theme
The 2024 conference, the 65th in the series, seeks to dig deep into the imperatives, implications, and impacts of socio-economic development in Nigeria to provide broader and elaborate insights and recommendations for addressing the issues. The imperative, implications, and impacts of socio-economic development in Nigeria are critical considerations for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners. Addressing these issues requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders to create a sustainable and inclusive development path for Nigeria. This concept note aims to provide a platform for further exploration and discussion on this important topic at the NES conference.
Conference Objectives
The conference objectives for the socio-economic development in Nigeria may include exploring and discussing the key imperatives for sustainable socio-economic development in Nigeria, including economic diversification, human capital development (including migration and population dynamics), infrastructure development, and democratic dividends. It will further discuss the implications of socio-economic development in Nigeria, particularly in relation to sectoral development, poverty reduction, social inclusion/protection, energy transition, climate change, and environmental sustainability.
Furthermore, the conference aims to analyse the impacts of socio-economic development on Nigeria's economy, quality of life, and global competitiveness. It will offer insights and recommendations for policymakers, researchers, and practitioners on addressing the challenges and opportunities related to socio-economic development in Nigeria. In sum, it aims to create a platform for collaboration and knowledge sharing among stakeholders to promote sustainable and inclusive development in Nigeria.
Sub-Themes
Given the focus objectives and theme of the conference, the sub-themes include (but are not limited to) the following:
i. Socio-economic Development to Build Resilience against Economic Shocks (e.g. Climate Change);
ii. Social Protection, Value Chain Development and Food Security;
iii. Human Capital Development, Migration and Economic Opportunities;
iv. Unemployment, Demographic Shift and Perspectives in Job Creation ;
v. Blue Economy, Transport and Socio-economic Development Nexus;
vi. Foreign Exchange Market and Sectoral Development;
vii. Energy Transition and socio-economic development;
viii. Regional Integration, Trade Performance and Socio-economic Development
ix. Analysis of pathways for Nigeria’s long term socio-economic development
x. Finance, Financial Reforms, Inclusive Growth and Shared Prosperity
xi. Industrial Development in Africa and Socio-economic Outcomes
xii. Structural Transformation, Inclusive and Sustainable Development
Apart from these sub-themes, Special Sessions and Side Events by individuals and organisations within the central objectives of the conference are highly welcome. In particular, disciplines in economics, such as trade, energy, health, modelers, public sector, monetary, and so on, are encouraged to organise special sessions. Such Special Sessions and Side Events should include descriptions, objectives, presenters and the modalities for consideration via email (conferences@nigerianeconomicsociety.org.ng and copy editor@nigerianeconomicsociety.org.ng with the subject line NES 2024 Conference Special Session).
Format of the Conference
The conference is designed to feature many activities. There will be keynote and plenary sessions with lead paper presentations, discussions, and specialised concurrent paper presentation sessions. It would also include breakfast sessions with the private sector, public agencies and international development partners. Some stakeholders include the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, National Assembly, Ministry of Budget and National Planning, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), NDIC, Development Bank of Nigeria, NNPC, Commercial Banks, Insurance companies, among others, will engage in policy round table discussions on different aspects of the conference.
Other interesting features of the Conference include opportunities for institutions, groups, and individuals to organise special sessions; induction for new NES members; social events (gala and cultural night), among others. The conference would also provide opportunities for employers to interface with final year and graduate students across Nigerian universities.
Submission Guidelines
We invite authors to submit Abstracts and panel sessions on any of the above sub-themes. The abstract should be in standard MS Word or PDF format and not be more than 700 words long, in Times New Roman font, 12 font, double line spacing. The submission should include the following in the order of listing: title of the research paper, sub-theme number, the names of author(s) and affiliations, JEL classification codes, overview, research objectives, and research hypothesis (where applicable), method of analysis, data sources, expected results, and references. Other required information is the corresponding author's email address and phone number (for jointly authored papers). Please note that any submission that does not adhere STRICTLY to these submission guidelines will not be considered.
Apart from individual abstracts, panel session proposals on topics relevant to the conference themes are invited. Such panel session proposals should include a session title, a brief description of the session (maximum 150 words), and concept notes of each proposed presentation (average of 3 with about 500 words, including details of the speakers and presentation papers).
Publication Opportunities
High-quality papers will be considered in the Nigerian Journal of Economic and Social Studies (NJESS), the flagship publication of the Nigerian Economic Society established in 1959. Other good papers will be considered in the 2024 Conference Proceedings.
